Material testing

Material testing:

¨     fracture mechanics (linear elastic, elasto-plastic and viscous-plastic) with the approach of     modern assessment concepts of design guidelines and norms for brittle fracture;

¨     fatigue (at the environmental temperature, at high or low temperatures, or with the cyclic variation of temperature);

¨     creep under the conditions of controlled (tolerated) degradations concept and the propagation of the crack-type defects;

¨     nondestructive testing: studies and research by means of the neuronal networks and of the phase logic, methodologies and equipment to determine the residual stresses during welding using the US and Barkhausen methods;

¨     macro and microscopic examination and hardness testing on samples taken from the industrial products subject to expertise and inspections; elaboration of examination reports of the characterisitc welded joints to qualify the welding technologies and welders;

¨     heat post-welding treatments: studies concerning the influence of certain post-welding treatments over the mechanical and structural features of alloyed and non-alloyed welding steels according to EN 10020 and EN 10027;

¨     volume heat treatments: studies concerning the strength and hardness mechanical features of industrial products in certain equipment of high responsibility ;

¨     simulated thermal cycles: studies concerning the influence of thermal cycles (welding, heat treatment, diffusion phenomena) on metallic materials;

¨     quantitative metallography: studies concerning the influence of stereometric parameters of structures, of metallic inclusions and of secondary phases over certain mechanic features of weldable steels;

¨     corrosion: studies concerning the assessment of corrosion phenomena on welded and non-welded metallic materials;

¨     structural brittleness: studies concerning the phenomena of structural brittleness occurred during welding and heat treatment of metallic materials;

¨      expertise and inspection specifications necessary for the achievement of proposed works;

¨     nondestructive structural analysis with metallographic replicas according to ISO 3057 directly placed on industrial products in welded and non-welded status, subject to inspections and expertise;

¨     inspection works on industrial products that operate under high pressure and temperatures in the chemical, petrochemical, nuclear-electric, and thermo-energetic industries;

¨     inspection works on industrial products that operate in the hydro-energetic industry;

¨     failure analysis in the field of welded and non-welded structures;

¨     studies concerning the increase of lifetime of certain industrial components in the construction of grinding machines for geologic products (coal, rocks);

¨     assessment of the residual life of certain essential components in the equipment used in the energetic industry.

Material joining

¨       research on the welding behavior of metallic and nonmetallic materials;

-       issue of the electric arc welding procedures for products made of various base materials (metallic and nonmetallic);

¨       repair/reconditioning by welding and thermal spraying of structures and parts;

¨       soldering and brazing, including zinc components;

¨       technical assistance at the beneficiary in welding, hardfacing, soldering, and brazing;

 ¨      software in the field of welding technologies.

LIEA operates the following testing, examination, and analyses:

Mechanical testing of:

-     base material

-     welded joints

-     soldered or brazed joints

Structural analysis:

-       metallographic analyses to determine the structural features of ferrous and nonferrous materials through destructive methods

-      metallographic analysis of welded joints of ferrous and nonferrous materials through destructive methods

-       metallographic analysis on metallic materials and welded joints through nondestructive methods – metallographic replicas

Testing, examination, and analyses of thermoplastic materials

Mechanical testing

Structural analysis

Testing of textile materials

Tensile testing of textile materials straps.

Nondestructive testing of laminated, wrought, and cast products and of welded joints:

-         penetrant liquid testing

-         magnetic powder testing

-        ultrasound testing and thickness measurements

-         penetrant radiation testing (RX)

LIEA has a mobile laboratory equipped with devices for modern nondestructive penetrating radiation

testing. The mobile laboratory, authorized by CNCAN, allows the progress of examination activities with

penetrant radiation at the venues required by the beneficiary.

TESTING OF THERMOPLASTIC MATERIALS

NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING:

Ultrasound testing of welded joints for high-denisty polyethylene pipes (PEHD), in accordance with procedure PS-LIEA-02-07, approved by ISCIR INSPECT (no. 19884-3L / 06.07.2004).

The nondestructive testing can be achieved both in the laboratory or production rooms and on site, by the mobile control laboratory of the Institute.

MECHANICAL TESTING:

Testing for internal pressure at a consistent temperature of pipes and welded joints of pipes made of thermoplastic materials.

The testing can be achieved in a thermostat bath (max. 96°C) or in an oven (max. 120°C). During the testing the pressure and temperature are controlled by two microcontrollers, and the whole process is controlled by a computer.

The testing procedure is based on the  SR ISO 1167:1993 and SR EN 921+AC:1997 standards.
